Meet Our Team

Shona Dewar, Clinical Director (Physiotherapist & MSK Sonographer)

BSc (Hons), MSc, MCSP, MSOMM

Shona graduated from Queen Margaret University in 2004 with BSc (Hons) in physiotherapy.  She has been working full time in private practice since 2012, having previously combined working within the NHS and private practice in various rotational and static posts.  She also has worked with amateur rugby teams since qualifying and continues to have a special interest in sports related injuries.  These experiences have enabled her to bring a wide variety of skills and expertise to the Musculoskeletal setting. 

Shona continues to expand her skills and experience and has also obtained post-graduate qualifications in Diagnostic Ultrasound, Acupuncture and Orthopaedic Medicine.  In 2014 she completed her Masters in Orthopaedic Medicine, specialising in chronic lower back pain, from the University of Middlesex.  She is currently carrying out a PG Certificate in Ultrasound guided injection therapy at the University of East London.

Having also worked in the Occupational Health setting, Shona is also trained in carrying out Ergonomic and Display Screen assessments.

When not working, Shona can be found chasing (running or cycling) her young daughters around the parks of Edinburgh!

Dr Stephen Miller (Sports and Exercise Medicine Physician)

MB ChB BMedSci (Hons) FSOMM MFSEM MRCGP (2013) MacadMEd DCH

Dr Miller is an experienced Sports and Exercise Medicine Physician, and GP with a Specialist Interest in Musculoskeletal Medicine. He graduated with First Class Honours in Sports and Exercise Medicine in 2004, and a degree in Medicine in 2007, both from the University of Edinburgh. He qualified as a GP in 2013, thereafter gaining postgraduate diplomas in child health, Sports and Exercise Medicine and Musculoskeletal Medicine. More recently, he has gained certification in diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound through the University of Bournemouth. He is a Fellow of the Society of Musculoskeletal Medicine and Member of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine and Academy of Medical Educators.

He continues to work within the NHS, with weekly Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Medicine Clinics, at the Western General Hospital and East Lothian Community Hospital respectively, and also has a teaching commitment to GP trainees, Advanced Nurse Practitioners and Physiotherapists.   

He is club doctor for Hibernian FC, a post he has held for the last eight seasons, and has also supported athletes medically at world athletics championships, Commonwealth games and European diving championships.

He has extensive experience of treating a broad range of musculoskeletal complaints, not only in high performance athletes but also in those less active. He is passionate about the role of exercise and non-surgical interventions in treating musculoskeletal disorders, and is skilled in injection therapy for a wide range of conditions.

Dr Miller lives in Portobello with his wife and two young children, and enjoys running, mountaineering and swimming.

Danielle Reid, Senior Physiotherapist

BSc (Hons.), MCSP

Danielle graduated from Queen Margaret University in 2015 with BSc (Hons) in physiotherapy.  She is registered with the Health and Care Professions Council and is a member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy.

Since then she has worked full time in the NHS completing several rotations before specialising in musculoskeletal physiotherapy and making the transition into private practice.

Danielle has also worked part-time for Hibernian FC for the past three and half years as academy physiotherapist running weekly injury clinics and providing pitch-side cover.

Danielle’s main clinical interest is sports rehabilitation and has a range of experience which enables her to diagnose and treat a variety of musculoskeletal conditions.

Iarla Byrne (Senior Physiotherapist) 

BSc (Hons), MSc, MCSP

Iarla is a Chartered Physiotherapist that joined the Bruntsfield Physiotherapy team in September 2020.

Originally from Ireland, Iarla completed his undergraduate degree BSc in Sport & Exercise Science and subsequently an MSc in Physiotherapy.

Throughout his studies he completed placements with the NHS across a number of disciplines and found enjoyment working closely with client specific goals in mind to get them where they wanted to be.

Iarla found his passion working in sport and gained experience working within professional and amateur rugby including Springbok 7s, Western Province, Munster rugby and Leicester Tigers has also worked within disciplines including rowing, golf, football, hockey and netball.

In his spare time Iarla has a passion for the outdoors and enjoys rock climbing, hiking, surfing and competes in Crossfit and olympic weightlifting.

Linzi Muir (Sports Masseuse)

Linzi is a registered member of the Scottish Massage Therapists organisation.  She provides Swedish Massage as well as Sports and Remedial Massage Therapy.  She is available on Fridays.

Costs for Linzi's treatments are £45 for 45 mins.

Reception and Administrative Staff

Kerri, Kat and Helen are our reception team and manage all telephone enquiries, emails and appointments from reception.

Martha is our Office and Finance Manager who deals with all accounts enquiries.

Robert Dewar, PhD - Non-Clinical Director

Robert Dewar is Shona’s husband and the practice’s non-clinical director.  As such he provides IT, office management and administration support for the clinic as well as occasional reception cover. 

When not at Bruntsfield Physiotherapy he is the a Consultant of Cyber Exercising, providing executive education and dialogue activities.  He has a PhD in EU cyber security policy.
