What is Diagnostic Musculoskeletal Ultrasound?

 

Diagnostic ultrasound scanning provides very detailed assessment of certain tissues, such as tendons, which can help improve the overall management of your condition.


Diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSKUS) imaging is performed by Doctor Stephen Miller, our Sports Medicine Physician or Shona Dewar, Lead Physiotherapist and MSK Sonographer to add additional diagnostic information to the clinical assessment.  The scan is conducted as part of a detailed clinical examination.

Structures appropriate for Ultrasound Scanning are:


  • Joints – Swollen and inflamed joints, Synovitis, Cysts and Osteoarthritis.
  • Bursa – Swollen, thickened, and inflamed bursae (bursitis)
  • Ligament – tears and ruptures
  • Tendon – tears and ruptures, tendinosis (degeneration), tenosynovitis (inflammation), calcific
  • Muscle – tears and haematomas
  • Nerve – inflammation and entrapment


***Please note, we are unable to offer scanning or injections of the face, neck or spinal conditions (neck, ribs and lower back).


Some conditions suitable for Ultrasound Scanning:


  • Tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome and tendinopathies of the wrist and hand
  • Calf, hamstring, and quadriceps muscle tears
  • Ankle and knee ligament tears
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Baker’s cyst, patella tendinopathy, osteoarthritis at the knee
  • Achilles and other tendinopathies around the ankle
  • Gluteal tendinopathy and bursitis at the hip
  • Frozen Shoulder
  • Calcific Tendinitis




Ultrasound Guided Injection Therapy


This is a procedure where the ultrasound helps to guide a small needle in to the skin directly to the injured area, injecting from range of joint and soft tissue injections including local anaesthetic, hyaluronic acid or anti-inflammatory steroid.


These types of injections can be useful for the following conditions:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Lateral hip pain/ bursitis
  • Rotator cuff tendinopathy/ bursitis
  • Frozen shoulder
  • Trigger finger
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
